Claire Meekel (1996, NL/ZA) is an audiovisual artist specializing in sound, video, and installation art. Born in the Netherlands and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, she graduated with Honours in Film & Television from the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) in 2019. Now based in Amsterdam, Claire’s work focuses on personal and social memory, deconstructing language with reference to associations and semiotics, past and present realities, the mundane, and themes that explore social and cultural tensions existing in South Africa and the Netherlands. She experiments in creating environments where viewers can engage on a combined intuitive and provocative level using video, sound, and visual art.

Her notable works include HOWL and AfterHOURS, full-motion video games that won an IGF award and were funded by New York University, Eeny Meeny Motion Pictures, a lockdown film project consisting of 301 short films, and a range of video and sound installations exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. She is also the co-creator of Knee Deep in Custard, a band together with her twin sister, where they produce visuals for their performances. In addition, she organizes Playgroup, a series of curated listening sessions held in Johannesburg, France, and Amsterdam.

Beyond her audiovisual work, Claire has contributed to theatre productions in Johannesburg through graphic and web design, and in 2019, she collaborated with fashion designer Thebe Magugu on the published magazine Faculty Press and has built websites for art projects and archives.
