These calendars are a series that came from an idea that I had to document my process of moving. Currently I am living in Amsterdam and I am always relocating from one house to the next because I don’t have a solid place to live. The time in each home varies, sometimes I have to leave in 6 months, sometimes 4 months, and if I’m lucky a year. On the day I move from my home all my furniture is packed into boxes around the house leaving something that once was my space into a vague nostalgia. I always take 12 pictures of every room in my home, with the boxes, the removed floors and empty light sockets and use my fingers and hands to “edit out” my packed things to try and replicate my old spaces. This is intended to create a lightness in the distressing moments of having to abruptly leave a home every couple of months because one can’t afford to rent out a permanent space or buy a home.

Faculty Press
Faculty Press is an annual ‘zine dedicated to capturing key moments, ideas and thoughts from the emerging voices that engage with and move our cultural landscape forward by using their respective mediums and fields to show the face of contemporary South Africa.
Faculty Press was launched at Somerset House in London in 2019. To create Faculty Press, Thebe Magugu joined forces with editors Lelo Meslani and Amy Zama, and art directors Abi and Claire Meekel. Together we created our take on a yearbook, spotlighting young South African talent by presenting its many contributors -- like the musicians Fela Gucci and Desire Marea of Faka, artist and activist Lady Skollie and photographer Travys Owen.
In Magugu’s words, it’s a “zine dedicated to capturing key moments, ideas, and thoughts from the emerging voices that engage with and move our cultural landscape forward.”

Thebe Magugu’s words: “Our SS19 collection, titled Art History, is about piecing together South Africa’s contrasting cultural landscape in interesting ways. Art is such a pro-active way of dealing with pain and trauma, which we as South African’s know quite a bit of. I found it quite beautiful that most of the major art movements stemmed from times of suffering and war, and you don’t have to look far to see that we are in a time of socio-political and economic upheaval. But hope has always been something that has forged us on, and personally, for my family and I, that sense of hope has been through the church, which you will notice cues of in the collection. Strong colour and prints, a negotiation between concealing & revealing and ecclesiastic shapes form the basis of our SS19 offering.”
